Match Report

It was a lovely day in Ipswich and I think everyone was quite looking forward to playing at the Ipswich School. After all Suffolk play their county games there. Having said that, when we did get out to the middle, it did look a bit weedy and it appeared as if the square had had a lot of use during the summer ... a lot of bowling and batting holes on the strips needed to be filled in and seeded. It had obviously been heavily watered on Friday ... a Friday in April that is, because the track had the consistency of concrete with the ball bouncing like a tennis ball. But it was flat.

Terry duly lost the toss, and seemed only prepared to offer the mildest note of remorse for having been so careless. I don't know where Castle have come from, but they do seem to be well out of their league as far as Section D are concerned.  They are winning the Div by some considerable margin regularly scoring over 200 and having scored 300 odd in one of their last games. Since Terry lost the toss (did I mention that ?), we trooped out to field expecting the worst. I parked myself on the point boundary, there was some shade and a spectator or two to help pass the time. It was good to see Minnie making an appearance, it was the first time that I had seen him this year and he hadn't changed at all. I think we share the same philosophical approach to the game. I'm none too sure what he did to upset Terry, but at one point he was asked to sweep the boundary from deep mid off to third man, which even for Minnie is a bit of an ask.

As it turned out, I thought that we didn't bowl or field that badly. Dan took a couple of good catches and a run out, and we gradually chipped away at the wickets. A large bank of grey cloud appeared mid afternoon giving us false hope of salvation, but sadly nothing came of it.

The fast outfield and the "extras" took its toll however, and we trooped back in to tea looking at a total of 270 odd on the board. Tea was in the Ipswich School "Long Room", a very splendid place spoilt only by the presence of what I can only think were crayfish paste sandwiches. Not Terry's favourite by all accounts. 270 always looked to be a run or two too much for us, but we didn't disgrace ourselves. Minnie, looking a tad unconventional if you believe in the ECB Coaching Manual, hit some nice shots before being dismissed by one-handed diving catch that even he might have been proud to have taken. Jamie looked classy as ever and poor Trev was given out lbw to a ball on its way to square leg. Dan allowed himself the luxury of getting his eye in for his first 2 balls before smacking the 3rd one for four. The lad is learning fast.

All in all we got to 150 odd for 7, which would have won us a game or two in the past, but not today.
